Learning from Robert Rodriguez
Upon viewing the top 10 shots directed by Robert Rodriguez, I've learnt that having an opening shot consisting of the main character's speciality or reflecting his/her identity, is a great way to set the scene and also give an insight into the character and their life. For instance, in the 'Raging Bull', Robert Rodriguez places a slow motion long shot of the boxer "feeling at home" in the boxing ring, such that he is just practicing alone. This could insinuate that the boxer is determined to get better at what he already does best, his speciality, and that it's also a huge part of his life, enough to be rolled as the opening scene.
